Across The Universe is a fictional love story set in the s amid the turbulent years of anti-war protest, the struggle for free speech and civil rights, mind exploration and rock and roll. At once gritty, whimsical and highly theatrical, the story moves from high schools and universities in Massachusetts, Princeton and Ohio to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Detroit riots, Vietnam and the dockyards of Liverpool.

On creating an original story from the Beatles catalog. The movie begins with two couples: Jude and his girlfriend in Liverpool, Lucy and her boyfriend in Midwest America before he ships off to bootcamp and Vietnam. The buddy pair move to New York, into a bohemian apartment where we meet singer Sadie, and, eventually, guitarist Jo-Jo and runaway Prudence.

Two iconic figures that were in silence: Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. In creating three more characters—the Jo-Jo character [Jimi] and Sadie [Janis] and Prudence—you could bring in a different sound.

So she runs away and she comes to New York. It works politically and on an emotional level. Taymor also found that by bending songs tonally, she could change the message and make them work for different storylines. She was told she could make more money [and] the white band would be better. But the fact is, he was the one Jo-Jo. It's a worthwhile ride, and the talents of the actors and filmmakers are unquestionable. I just found myself periodically irritated by cheap gimmicks to sell a song or two, and I wish those parts could have been edited out, because otherwise I would've raved about what a great film this would've been.
