Oski remains a simultaneously beloved and arguably creepy mascot who brings joy — and terror — to campus students and visitors. Regardless of your personal opinion on Oski, we can all agree to appreciate his iconic status, so be sure to wish him a happy 80th birthday and get a picture with him when we hopefully have the joy of seeing him in person again.

Because of the popularity of the Oski Yell and the danger of having live bear cubs on the field at football games, it was decided that there should be a more loveable mascot: Oski.

The tree in front of the Wheeler Hall steps was a favorite meeting place for students between and , when the oak had to be removed because of its age. The tree was so missed that another oak, and a bronze plaque, was planted in its place.
Soon after the Student Union complex opened in , the nearby fountain became the favorite spot of a German short-haired pointer named Ludwig. Ludwig spent every day in the fountain, and in it was named in his honor.
The Victory Cannon was donated by the class of in time for the football season. The gun appeared at all home games and was fired at the Big Game whenever the football team scored a touchdown or safety, kicked a field goal or won a game. Sophomore men would gather on the lawn to haze freshmen, who retaliated by burning their class numerals in the lawn at night. The stone ball in front of the Campanile is more than a century old, but this tradition is much newer.
Just a few years ago, students began referring to the sphere as the "4. From sporting events to graduation, and every kind of event in-between, you'll hear one of Cal's spirit songs being sung.
I have a feeling it may be the latter. This is one of my more controversial questions, I must admit. Again, another controversial question. Have all EECS or political science majors grown to fit the stereotype?
Or has Oski noticed a trend in the data? My final question is one that I assume Oski gets the most, and the one that I may or may not be allowed to ask. Regardless, it is a question that frequents my mind: Who is the person behind the mask?
