Picking these will allow Shepard to resolve a seemingly impossible situation favourably, which often keeps characters alive and benefits all parties involved. In these situations, picking the normal white options on the right-hand side of the Dialogue Wheel will still resolve the situation, but in a more crude manner.
In addition to resolving the situation favourably, picking a Persuasion option will also award a higher amount of Morality points compared to the right-hand white option.
Charm options award Paragon points, and Intimidate options award Renegade points. Persuasion options aren't available by default: they must be unlocked by passing what is known as a Persuasion Check.
Telling two warehouse guards to go away will have a much lower requirement than convincing the villain that you're right and they're wrong, for example. The requirements for passing a Persuasion Check also differ per Mass Effect game. What you need to do to pass these checks is explained in greater detail in the Game-Specific Differences section, but here's the short version:.
Introduced in Mass Effect 2 and continued into Mass Effect 3, Interrupts are a way to initiate spur-of-the-moment actions in the middle of a conversation without having the scene stop to bring up the Dialogue Wheel first. The results are often just as dramatic and impactful as using a Persuasion option.
Paragon Interrupts use a blue wing icon and award Paragon Points, while Renegade Interrupts use a red star icon and award Renegade Points. As you might imagine, the tone of the Interrupt depends on the Morality.
Paragon Interrupts are often altruistic, compassionate and understanding actions, while Renegade Interrupts are abrasive, violent and commanding. That said, there can be overlap: a Paragon Interrupt can still violently put someone in their place if the context demands it, and sometimes a Paragon may be forced to use a Renegade Interrupt to save Shepard's life if the situation is particularly dire.
As the Mass Effect series went on, Bioware continued to refine and adjust how to unlock the various Persuasion options. This section details the quirks that make unlocking Charm and Intimidate options unique to each game. In the first Mass Effect, the ability to unlock Charm and Intimidate options in conversations is tied directly to Shepard's stats in the Squad Menu. What this means is that Mass Effect 1 is the only game in the Trilogy where you can directly upgrade your ability to unlock Charm and Intimidate options just through gaining XP and levelling up.
